Virtually every state in the U.S., including the New England states, has a chronic shortage of foster and adoptive families-the exact opposite of how things should be! Instead of foster children in the system waiting for a family to care for them, it is the foster and adoptive families in the system that should be waiting-waiting for children who need them…waiting because the need is so adequately met.
This may seem like a large, even impossible, vision. But, what if we broke it down into a smaller vision? What if just one new family raised their hand and said, “We have room in our heart and home for a child in need.”? That doesn’t seem quite so imposing anymore, does it? This alone would go a long way toward solving the crisis in our midst. In many ways, it would revolutionize it.
So, let’s pray and work toward this goal. We at Fostering Hope are calling this vision by the name of plusONE. plusONE is simple: Whatever number of families within a given church are currently involved in foster and adoptive care, let’s engage, equip, and support one more family…i.e. plusONE. And, once accomplished, perhaps another plusONE and then another…one by one until the glory of God’s adopting grace radiates throughout New England.
